Joining the 167th Cub Pack

You (and your parents) have considered joining our cub pack. Perhaps you are moving up from Beavers – or maybe this is your first step in Scouting! We are hope that you will enjoy our cub pack and all the fun, interesting and fun things that we get up to!

I thought it would be good to share some of what we do at cubs and introduce a few of the principles!

What’s the point of being a Cub Scout?

Scouting exists to actively engage and support young people in their personal development, empowering them to make a positive contribution to society. Scouting is more than just having fun – it is about stretching young people in their social, physical, intellectual, emotional and spiritual lives so that they can learn and develop in an enjoyable and practical way.

We do this through a mixture of active, reflective and fun activities; both indoor and outdoor. This is called The Scout Method.

Your Investiture

We hope that you decide to commit to membership and be ‘invested’ soon. This means you will make some promises and we will give you your 167th Badges and Scarf. If you are coming up from our Beavers, you will already have the right scarf! Before cubs are invested, they wear either their full Beaver uniform or home clothes. The first time you’ll wear cub uniform is on the evening that you will be invested in to our cub pack.

What you are saying: Promise, Law and Motto

At your investiture you will be asked to make the following promise. Do you agree with it? How easy do you think it will be to keep the law? What sort of person will you become if you are able to keep the law and abide by your promise? Try to learn the promise and the law off by heart before your investiture.

The Cub Scout Promise:

I promise that I will do my best
To do my duty to God and to the Queen
To help other people
And to keep the Cub Scout Law.

Alternative Cub Promises are available

The Cub Scout Law:

Cub Scouts always do their best
Think of others before themselves
And do a good turn every day.

The Cub Scout Motto:

Be Prepared

What are the expectations

Cub Pack Meetings

We will expect you to attend cubs each Monday evening unless you have something occasional or unforeseen that you really do need to attend – in which case we would like one of you parents to tell us. While you are at cubs, we expect you to get involved with all the activities, to be respectful, kind and helpful to all. You will listen well to instructions from leaders and anything that other cubs are sharing.

Church Parade Services

(Parade services were paused during covid and remain paused while the scout group and the church consider what serves the community best)

Scouting is a practice that overtly promotes the spiritual development of young people, alongside the more obvious physical development and learning skills for life. The 167th Scout Group is sponsored and supported by our hosts: Westbury Baptist Church. Cubs in the 167th are expected to attend the 5 or 6 Parade services each year as much as they are expected to join in on a Monday Pack Night. We would ask that you give priority to these infrequent Parade Services over weekly sports etc.
