Cabot Virtual Badge Day 4th July 2020

I’m delighted that you have chosen to learn a bit about pioneering, that is, the skill of making things using rope, knots and wooden spars. We will be using the same principles that could be used to build large scale structures like bridges and zip lines – but on a smaller scale.

Learning before the day:

Please come to the day having already learnt the following knots (plus any others!)

  • Bowline
  • Clove Hitch
  • Reef Knot
  • Figure of Eight

Equipment List:

Make sure you have the following items with you for the session:

  • For the Game:
    • A piece of paracord, rope or thickish string for tying knots
    • A wooden spoon, rolling pin, sibling or parent’s arm (on to which you can tie clove hitch)
  • For the mini indoor pioneering project
    • 3 long pencils plus one that can be shorter
    • A handful of elastic bands
    • 2 x 50cm lengths of household string (thinner than the knot tying rope)
    • A Bottle Top
    • A small amount of blu tack
    • A Sheet of Paper
  • For the Rope making:
    • A few carrier bags
    • A pair of Scissors
    • A parent to help at this point is also helpful – for the last 30 minutes of the session
